 As part of Project Gateway's striving for sustainability and self-sufficiency, the Issachar Trust was created in 2004, to raise funds which are then used to support community projects. One of the ways we do this is through Tourism - we encourage visitors and organisations to learn about South Africa’s past and Project Gateway’s future. School parties, local individuals, and overseas visitors are amongst the many people who visit The Old Prison to discover more about its history.
There are currently 3 initiatives under the Issachar Trust umbrella: Tourism, Volunteers and Teams, and Conference Venues
 Teacher’s day on the 27th February was indeed a milestone in the life of The Old Prison. The aim of the day was to enlighten principals, history teachers and tourism teachers about The Old Prison and to encourage scholars to visit the prison as part of their South African history. The response we had from teachers was great as we had a total of 43 teachers attending the event. Schools attending included; Maritzburg College, St Henry’s MBC, Fezokuhle, Sibongamandla and Panorama Primary.
All the teachers felt that the tour was informative and educational and they would definitely consider bringing their scholars for a tour. They appreciated being hands on with this historic monument and to most of them this was an “eye-opening” session. Some of the comments that were taken from the questionnaires completed by the teachers included: “Very good information for us and our generation”, “Marvellous to explore”, “The prison lends itself well to our history”, etc.
A second Teachers' Day was held on
25th March. Again, all those who took
part found it to be an enjoyable,
informative and worthwhile experience.
Our appreciation and thanks are warmly

who travelled from far away.
