| The Sunset overnight shelter provides temporary shelter and accommodation to those in the city with nowhere else to go. Each night up to 40 men and women can be accommodated. The staff also provide education brochures and wherever possible job and skills opportunities for residents. Since SOS opened in 1992, approximately 150,000 people have been served in this ministry.
As well as meeting the very practical needs of food and shelter, the prayer of the team is that Jesus is brought into the lives of homeless people to give them long-term hope. Pre-fabricated cabins offer shelter to people and food is served to them on a covered verandah. Zeph Kheswa is in charge of the day to day running of the shelter, preparation and serving of food, and has responsibility for overseeing those staying each night.
We have continued to offer residents counselling, love and prayer where they have needed it. In the past year more than 50 people have been counselled and supported in this way.
Recently a couple came through our shelter having stayed in a number of places on their way to Cape Town. They told us that we were on of the best shelters they had stayed in, particularly in the area of giving dignity and value to those who stay there. We
are grateful for such an encouragement.
This year we have been working on our partnerships with the Albany Bakery, Department for Social Welfare, Department of Labour and Department of Home Affairs from applications, grants and provision, and we hope these will bring us new opportunity and capacity in the year to come.
In 2008 finances were a challenge and apart from Community Chest funding, we do not have sufficient money to continue at full capacity. We are therefore operating in maintenance mode but are hoping to move out of this as soon as possible!
