| Gateway Christian School seeks to provide quality but affordable education to disadvantaged children who would not be able to afford the private and other schools in the area.
The School opened in January 1998, catering for children in Grades 1, 2 and 3. Grades 1 and 2 met in opposite ends of Gateway Hall, and Grade 3 were taught in the Chapel, as at that stage the school had no buildings of its own. The Principal's office was part of a store room, shared with piles of stationery!
Since its opening, the school has grown immensely and now contains 9 classrooms, a library, an administration block and a hall shared with Project Gateway. Grades R up to 7 are taught in the school, and it has a full staff, including a bursar, admin staff, kitchen staff and teachers. More than 1000 disadvantaged children have been given high quality education over the years, and at present, there are approximately 350 children on roll.
In addition to the curriculum, the school enjoys many different events and activities:
Mother’s Day fundraising sale
On May 7 2010 Teachers made crafts and cakes that were sold to the children to raise money for the library. Children could buy cards, bookmarks, sweets, cupcakes, popcorn, pens, jewellery etc to offer to their mothers on the occasion of mothers’ day.
As it was on a Friday, many children were wearing their football shirts to show their support for the coming World Cup.

Hot chocolate and pyjama day
June 3 2010: Pyjama Day at GCS was an occasion for the children to have a fun day coming to school in their pyjama and staff, also in their pyjama, selling hot chocolate.

Hooked on Books:
On the same day, all the children in the school had the opportunity to participate in 'Hooked on Books', a dynamic educational company which aims to inspire reading and a love of books. The company does so by reading short excerpts from books in a theatrical way. Some learners were
asked to participate in some of the mini plays and were dressed up in silly costumes for the occasion. The children loved it and can’t wait until next for 'Hooked on Books' to come back!
Mini World Cup Tournament
The teachers organised a mini world cup tournament in which each class supported a different country and wore the appropriate kit colour. This was lots of fun for the learners as many of them got to play soccer, and the others cheered for their favourite teams. The learners also had the opportunity to parade in a short opening ceremony, perform the diskie dance, have their faces and fingernails painted and purchase food and drinks from the teachers. What a great day!
