King DinizuluKing Dinizulu
The son of King Cetshwayo was imprisoned twice in Pietermaritzburg; once in1888 before his exile to St Helena, and again in 1907 for his complicity in the Bambatha Rebellion.

Derick R C Marsh
Derick wrote his book, "The Recurring Miracle" whilst imprisoned in Pietermaritzburg during the 1960 state of emergency. He was imprisoned in the same cell as Peter Brown.

 

Moses MadhibaMoses Mabhida
Moses Mabhida was an educationist, the first African Chancellor of the University of the North, and an author. He was also one of the first Africans to be appointed as sub-inspectors of Bantu Education in 1957.

Kasturba GandhiKasturba Gandhi
Kasturba was the wife of Mohandas Gandhi. She joined in the struggle in the agitation to improve working conditions in South Africa. She was detained in The Old Prison on 13th October 1913.

Harry GwalaHarry Gwala
Harry Gwala was a politician as well as a teacher. In 1964 he was arrested for recruiting Umkhonto Wesizwe. He was arrested again in 1975 and and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Hloni Zondi
Hloni Zondi was born in 1961 in Imbali. He was the city mayor of Pietermaritzburg. He distinguished himself as a student leader in student politics and was part of the student leadership.

Peter Brown
Peter Brown was a South African liberal and friend to Alan Paton. He was imprisoned in The Old Prison for 3 months after the Sharpeville shootings.
